Design Principles
Every layer is designed around denied, degraded, intermittent, and limited-bandwidth (DDIL) conditions. Connectivity is treated as an opportunity, not an assumption.
The network layer is not a radio or a waveform. It is designed to run above whatever transports exist and decide what the network does when they fail.
Autonomy in the DERECHO portfolio is supervised autonomy. Operators set intent and retain oversight; software is designed to carry execution.
Common payload interfaces, separable software modules, and platform-portable governance are design requirements, so systems integrate under existing architectures rather than replacing them.
When data cannot move electronically, it is designed to move physically without losing integrity, and to reconcile when the network heals.
